Voice from the Underworlds Talk 17th October
This talk has been stirring in me for a long time; even before my mother died last year I was already in the throws of some incredible underworld labyrinthine pilgrimage with my grief; one that was intensely personal and very hard to articulate even for a wordsmith. Then after she died, and decades of care responsibility lifted from me, I was catapulted inwards and outwards to the furthest reaches of my cosmos; wave upon wave of experiences moved my soul to dance in the unity of agony and ecstasy. What I couldn’t bear was the sad faced condolences and the expectations I was “sad”. I tried to tell people I wasn’t just “sad”; something far more magical was happening. What people heard was “I was OK” and most folks left me well alone. I WAS... OK… I was the most OK I had ever been, and yet I was also profoundly broken at the same time and I needed companionship, a call only one person heeded.
I am a Grief Doula as well as Death Doula, I have accompanied many through these underworld journeys and yet, and yet… when I was there myself I saw so searingly the absence in our culture of a deep understanding of bereavement as a Rite of Passage. I thought I was asking for support but very little came; once I resurfaced people said that my requests for help had not registered with them. I was calling out from the Underworlds and no one could hear me! I really want to tell my story; as a practitioner and a pilgrim; for mutual learning and deepening of our collective cultural understanding of Grief. I would love to tell of my travels and to hear from others too.
